Kaitlin Barnes’ hands were freezing.

It always happened when she was nervous.

Instead of sweaty palms, her blood turned to ice.

That point is arguable for many people, but the hundreds of debaters gathered at C.M. Russell High School on Friday would certainly affirm that topic resolution.

Nov. 10--WILKES-BARRE -- The Wilkes-Barre Area School Board didn't have to debate whether or not to keep contributing to the Meyers High School Speech and Debate Team.

Kim Borland, who heads the team with his wife Ruth, said there were concerns because it's November and the team has already competed in two tournaments. But the school board hadn't given its annual $20,000 contribution.

A new study suggests that African-American students who participate in debate leagues earn better grades, are more three times more likely to graduate from high school than similar students who do not join their debate team, and are better prepared for college success.

Fourteen teams competed in four rounds of debate in the Jr. Varsity Bracket debating the National Resolve:  The United States Government should substantially increase its funding of social services for those persons living in poverty in the United States.

NU debate won its first tournament of the year at Gonzaga University in September and closed out the Wayne State University Motor City Classic College Debate tournament in October. Debate Society program coordinator Luke Hill said teams of debaters also placed at tournaments held at Georgia State University, the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Kentucky. Fitzmier said the team’s performance since September has been “fantastic.”

Resolved: That merit pay based on student achievement should be a significant component of K-12 teacher compensation in United States public schools.

Introduction

The December Public Forum resolution asks a straight-forward question: Should merit pay based on student achievement should be a significant component of K-12 teacher compensation in United States public schools?

1. Should the Senate pass the same health care legislation that the House has just approved?  Research
2. What steps should the US military take to prevent discrimination against Muslims after the recent Fort Hood shootings? Research

As she watched the competition, the sophomore at Scranton High School kept going over her selection in her head - where to pause, when to speed up, how to end. She imagined being the character in the dramatic reading she would soon perform, silently mouthing the words.
