About Minh A. Luong

Prof. Minh A. Luong teaches in the Ethics, Politics, and Economics program and is Assistant Director of International Security Studies at Yale University. He founded and directs the Yale Ivy Scholars Program for Lincoln-Douglas Debaters. He has served as International Affairs Council Fellow at the Yale Center for International and Area Studies. He has taught interdisciplinary senior seminars and graduate courses on international relations, diplomacy, negotiations, espionage & economic intelligence, privacy, and security issues. He has appeared on major television and radio news networks and has been quoted in newspapers internationally. His research and teaching on applied philosophy in politics and economics makes him one of the premier authorities on Lincoln-Douglas debate.

He previously served as Chairperson of the Department of Speech and Communication Studies at The Pinewood School (CA), Director of Debate at San Francisco State University, and Director of Forensics at the University of California at Berkeley. An active member of the forensic community, he serves as director of Lincoln-Douglas debate at the National Tournament of Champions (TOC), Columbia University Invitational, Princeton University Classic, Co-Director of the Harvard University National Invitational, and is a member of the TOC Advisory Committees for both L-D and policy debate.

A nationally recognized authority and published author of nearly 20 articles on debate theory and practice, Prof. Luong founded and directs The National Debate Education Project which conducts forensic seminars in underserved areas of the country. He holds the distinction of being the only person to have won the National Collegiate Lincoln-Douglas Debate Championship title both as a competitor and coach. As a high school coach, he guided his students to great success at regional and national tournaments in both L-D and Policy debate as well as individual events and Student Congress. He previously served as the founding curriculum director of Lincoln-Douglas debate at the National Debate Forum, UC Berkeley, NFC-Austin, and Stanford University institutes.
