Samantha Mazer I've been a corporate executive in the banking, professional services and leadership education sectors for almost two decades. I debated throughout university (not at Redlands) and believe it was a key contributor to me rising above and ahead of many less articulate and strategic colleagues. As an employer, I cons ider university-level debating favourably when assessing resumes. I see too many graduates (often with advanced degrees) who can't think critically and only have an opinion once you give it to them. Debate teaches - in a practical and experiential way that embeds learning - the critical thinking, research and communication skills that few other disciplines can. Why on Earth would any sane administrator cut debate?

Andy Conway It's shocking to me to think the university could consider dropping a program so effective at directing young people toward skills that can make a lasting contribution to society. When I look at what I do and how I contrinute in my vocation, it's clear that my experiences in debate are at the very core of how I conduct myself professionally.

Barbara L. Baker I'm not a former or current debator, but I am a communication professor who once lived in Redlands, and have had graduate students from UR at my current university. We also have an active debate team which the faculty--regardless of specialization--support. Debate is an essential activity in helping with reasoning skills, logic, and the abilty to think criticially.
