A local college student is one of six debaters picked to put on an exhibition in Washington, D.C., later this month.

Tanesha Slaughter, a member of Fayetteville State University's debate team, will debate five other students as part of the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities on Aug. 31. Presidents and chancellors from HBCUs nationwide will attend the event.

Slaughter's skills were noted last week when she and three other members of FSU's debate team attended the first HBCU Debate Workshop at Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, Va.

Slaughter teamed up with Queen Colbert, and the two made it to the championship round before losing to another team.

In the individual rankings, Colbert and Queen tied for being the best speaker.

Kenneth Coleman and Matthew Johnson - the second team sent by FSU - placed fifth.

Photos and more information about the workshop can been seen at www.hbcudebate.com.
