The honeymoon is over, but the love affair with the style of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is far from done. This week, the newlywed duchess wore a beige dress (costing about $340) from the brand Reiss as she and Prince William met the Obamas in London. The dressmaker's website promptly crashed as royal fashion watchers rushed to buy it.Purple Bridesmaid Dresses Of course, the fascination with Kate Middleton began before the grand wedding in Westminster Abbey on April 29, for fans and business types alike. Her dress, by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, Silver Bridesmaid Dresseswas an instant hit - as was the streamlined white bridesmaid dress worn by Pippa, her sister. Everywhere, dress companies are hoping to sell the dream of that fairy-tale wedding with copies of those dresses. In Montreal, JS Collections and Le Chateau are on the case; in the U.S., ABS by Allen Schwartz and Kleinfeld Bridal have versions. "She's definitely a new fashion icon,'' said Andrew Hops, vice-president of dress specialists Groupe JS International, which will produce the Duchess and Pippa gowns for its JS Collections line. (Groupe JS has four other divisions: Theia, Zenobia, JS Boutique and ML Monique Lhuillier.) Blue Bridesmaid Dresses "People are trying to emulate everything she wears." Brown Bridesmaid Dresses On April 29, Hops, pattern-maker Francesca Fraga and designer Julie Durocher started watching the wedding on TV in the wee, wee hours of the morning. By 6: 30 a.m., all were assembled at the Chabanel St. offices to watch, sketch, drape and design. Gold Bridesmaid Dresses A first sample of the Duchess Gown, as they call it, was ready within 48 hours. Green Bridesmaid Dresses By Monday, the Pippa Dress was also ready to sally forth for sales and production. "Everybody's on Pippa,'' Hops said. That dress was first sold to Dillards; now U.S. department stores including Macy's and Nordstrom are also placing orders, as are specialty boutiques in Montreal and the rest of Canada. Ivory Bridesmaid Dresses The Pippa will retail for about $220, and will be produced in a poly-crepe fabric, first in black or white, then cobalt, red and blush. "Everybody can wear that dress,'' Hops said. Red Bridesmaid Dresses The Duchess has the original's Chantilly lace details, a bustle back and embroidered scalloped hem. Unlike Kate's dress, it will be made of poly satin (not silk gazar) and will sport a three-foot train (not nine feet). It will cost $698, and is available for pre-order at Nordstrom. Orange Bridesmaid Dresses Both dresses will not hit the racks until the end of August. Le Chateau, meanwhile, will have versions of the Kate and Pippa dresses in stores by mid-June. The Pippa will come in black or white and knee-length and long versions, for $189 and $225, respectively. Pink Bridesmaid Dresses The Kate, with a shorter train than the original, is expected in stores by June 22, at a cost under $400, said Franco Rocchi, senior vicepresident of sales and marketing for the retail chain. The Pippa by JS Collections will be carried at Mode Colette, 6571 St. Hubert St.; Mode Marco, 9205 St. Michel Blvd.; and Boutique Mariclod in St. Lin.
