Solon High School students again compete at national speech, debate tournament

Commitment to excellence is a hallmark of Solon High School’s speech and debate team, which competed June 10-15 in Indianapolis against 3,000 students from across the nation and Southeast Asia.

The National Forensics League starts with 120,000 student members before narrowing the selection down to just a few thousand.

This year, Solon High School won the North Coast District Tournament, which qualified 11 students to compete at the national level.

This is the high school’s fourth year in a row competing at nationals, and sixth time total since the club’s inception. The four consecutive wins have all taken place under the leadership of coaches Jennifer Moore and Daniel Ceci.

Students who competed nationally include juniors Eric Wang and London Christian, seniors Liz Eder and Nisha Malhotra, and 2012 graduates Annie Xin, Priyanka Pai, Meghan Pavithran, Kathy Zhang, Tiffany Li, William Qu and John Zeng.

Four of these youths made it into the top 60 octafinals, including Wang in International Extemporaneous Speaking, Li in United States Extemporaneous Speaking, Pavithran in Humorous Interpretation and Christian in Dramatic Interpretation.

Wang is on his way to becoming a four-time national qualifier, which is accomplished by only 20 students annually. Thus far, he has competed at the national level during his freshman and sophomore years.

“For Eric, it all comes down to motivation. He has been motivated since the day he walked in the door as a freshman,” Ceci said.

Li was a semifinalist in Extemporaneous Commentary, placing seventh in the nation. This was the team’s most distinguished accomplishment for 2012.

“This was the most successful national (speech and debate) tournament that Solon High School has ever had,” Ceci said.

The competition consisted of nonstop talking, with students competing from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

“It’s not a race. It’s a marathon,” he joked, stating that students have to work hard to maintain their stamina.

Four years ago, when Ceci first began coaching at Solon High School, the team consisted of 25 members. Since that time, the club has grown to 65 participants.

“Every year we’ve gathered more interest,” he said.

Ceci said the high school’s key to success is striking a good balance between having fun and achieving one’s personal best.

A total of 15 students graduated this year, leaving a big hole in the club’s membership. Li, the team president, is among those graduates.

“Tiffany brought students together. She was always there to encourage them and provide them with feedback to move forward,” Ceci said.

The group of 15 is the biggest the high school has ever lost in a single year, but Ceci and Moore will be working hard to ensure they place students in events that best suit their talents.

Students have to try out in order to earn a spot on the team; but thus far, anyone who has shown interest has been able to participate.

“As the team garners more popularity, students may have to be cut,” Ceci said.

The season will reopen in late October, but Ceci and Moore begin working with students more than a month ahead of time.

“It’s a long season, but it’s nice to see students hone their skills over the course of the school year,” Ceci said. “The skills they learn will really take them far in life.”
