Debate team makes its case for supplement

Nov. 10--WILKES-BARRE -- The Wilkes-Barre Area School Board didn't have to debate whether or not to keep contributing to the Meyers High School Speech and Debate Team.
Kim Borland, who heads the team with his wife Ruth, said there were concerns because it's November and the team has already competed in two tournaments. But the school board hadn't given its annual $20,000 contribution.

A new study suggests that African-American students who participate in debate leagues earn better grades, are more three times more likely to graduate from high school than similar students who do not join their debate team, and are better prepared for college success.

Some of the best students from the Northeast will showcase their research and argue the U.S. nuclear weapons policy in a two-day event in Danbury this weekend. Western Connecticut State University's award-winning Roger Sherman Debate Society will play host to and compete against 21 visiting college teams in Warner Hall on the university's midtown campus.
BHS Debate Team Wins With Words

Six members (three teams) of the Bainbridge High School (BHS) Debate Team traveled to Houston County High School in Warner-Robins this weekend for a debate tournament.
Fourteen teams competed in four rounds of debate in the Jr. Varsity Bracket debating the National Resolve: The United States Government should substantially increase its funding of social services for those persons living in poverty in the United States.
